Cleaned up after

Tidy is the word that keeps coming up in the reviews.

Recent work

Light where it should be, and nothing where it should not.

Most of what an electrician does disappears into a wall. What you actually live with is the bit at the end: whether the pendant hangs straight, whether the outlet sits flush, whether the light lands where you wanted it. That is the part worth getting right.

Period homes, modern wiring

Gisborne has a lot of houses with ceiling roses, leadlight and pressed cornices, and they deserve better than a bare batten holder. Fittings get chosen and hung to suit the room they are in, then wired to current standards behind the plaster where nobody has to look at it.

  • Pendants and feature fittings hung true
  • Downlights laid out before they are cut in
  • Existing decorative plaster kept intact

Hot water

Heat pumps, put in properly and set up to run cheap.

Swapping to a heat pump is one of the bigger changes you can make to a power bill, and most of the saving comes down to how the unit is set once it is on the wall. Getting it to do its heating overnight, on the cheaper rate, is the difference between a good result and an expensive one.

“He diagnosed and fixed an electrical issue with my hot water unit that a previous electrician had got wrong, saving significant unnecessary expense in the process. He also reconfigured the unit to heat overnight so I’m using cheaper off-peak power rates.”

What we do

Domestic electrical, start to finish.

One number for the whole job, whether it is a single power point or every circuit in a house that has been stripped back to the studs.

Heat pump hot water

Supply and installation of heat pump hot water systems, from the changeover through to setting the unit up so it runs when power is cheapest.

Switchboard upgrades

Older boards brought up to standard, with the reasoning explained first so you know what you are paying for and why it matters.

Lighting and feature lighting

Pendants, downlights and LED strip work. From a single lantern over a hallway to lighting recessed into every stair tread.

Renovation and rewiring

Full electrical for a renovation, roughed in with the builder and finished off neatly once the walls and ceilings go back on.

Power points and general work

New outlets, relocations and the everyday jobs around a house, set flush and finished so they look like they were always there.

Fault finding

Tracking down the problem properly, including the ones another electrician has already had a go at and not got to the bottom of.

Commercial

Office fit-outs, in town and out here.

Continuous linear lighting, service runs above an open ceiling, and a floor full of desks that all need power. The same standard as the domestic work, on a bigger plan.

About

A small outfit, and it shows in the work.

NEM Electrical Services is run by Mark, out of Gisborne. When there is a bigger job on, James is there too. It is a small team on purpose: the person who quotes the work is the person who turns up to do it, and the person you ring afterwards if something needs another look.

That is most of what the reviews are actually about. Not one of them talks about the wiring. They talk about being told what the options were without pressure, about the price at the end matching the price at the start, and about the site being swept up before anyone left. Twenty-two reviews in, every single one is five stars.

A light fitting is the one bit of the job you look at every day. It is worth hanging it properly.

Big fittings are heavier and fussier than they look. They need the right mounting behind the plaster, a drop measured against the room rather than guessed, and the rings sitting level once the ceiling is closed up. Get any of that wrong and it is obvious from the doorway for the next ten years.

Five stars for Mark! He diagnosed and fixed an electrical issue with my hot water unit that a previous electrician had got wrong, saving significant unnecessary expense in the process. Friendly, efficient and kept me across every step. He also reconfigured the unit to heat overnight so I'm using cheaper off-peak power rates. Highly recommended.
